Beneath each stand are values: what that person ranks highest. Values decide how people judge a plan and what they choose to do.
Luca values
- A steady wage.
Ana values
- The fishing way of life.
The council values
- Tax income for schools.
Held alone, learned together: Ana's values are her own, but she learned them on her father's boat, and the fishing families keep them alive.
Keep values apart from beliefs: a value says what is worth having (fishing matters more than hotels); a belief says what is true (mangroves protect the coast).
