The big idea: A UCD team develops a deep understanding of the user, the task and the environment.

No single discipline covers all three — which is why the team is multidisciplinary rather than just large.

Each discipline placed under the one of the three it strengthens. Step through to see what each actually contributes.

The user

  • Psychologist — how users perceive, decide and err under pressure
  • Ergonomist — anthropometric and physiological limits
  • Together: what the user can actually do

The task

  • Engineer — whether the task can be performed at all
  • Product designer — turning what the task needs into a usable form
  • Together: can it work, and can they work it

The environment

  • Anthropologist — how setting, culture and routine shape use
  • Marketer — which markets and conditions it reaches
  • Together: what the real world will do to it
The point is not more opinions: Each discipline notices a failure the others are not equipped to see. An ergonomist spots a reach problem an engineer will not; an anthropologist spots a routine problem neither will.

In the exam: A question about team composition wants you to link a discipline to one of the three and say what it contributes. "They bring different ideas" is not an answer.

How this is tested — explaining what each discipline contributes to understanding the user, task and environment. It comes up two ways:

Paper 1 — multiple choice

  • Match a discipline to the aspect it mainly informs.
  • Identify the specialist missing from a described team.

Paper 2 — analysing a product

  • Explain how named disciplines improve the design of a product.
  • Explain the risk of a design team drawn from one discipline.
The trap: Listing job titles with no contribution attached. Each discipline has to be tied to the user, the task or the environment, with something it tells the team that nobody else can.
IB-style questionExplain[4 marks]

A team designing a portable defibrillator for public places consists only of electronic engineers. Explain two specialists it should add and what each would contribute.
