The big idea: Every designer has a duty to produce a safe product, and a duty on its own cannot be checked.

A standard states the hazard, the test and the limit — so the same product either passes or does not, and two people can agree about it.

Standards are cumulative: No individual designer could discover every hazard. A standard is the accumulated result of everybody else's failures, written down as a test.

That is the strongest argument for following one, and it is the one students almost never make.

The order safety decisions are taken in

Design the hazard out

Remove it entirely — no exposed gears, no reachable hot surface, no trapping gap. Costs nothing forever once it is done.

Guard it

If it must exist, enclose it or interlock it so the user cannot reach it while it is dangerous.

Warn about it

A label or an instruction. The weakest control, because it depends on a user reading and then remembering.

Never: rely on the user

"Users should not put fingers there" is not a safety measure. People do — especially children, and tired people at the end of a shift.

Conformity DOES mean

  • Not obviously dangerous to the population the standard imagined
  • Tested the way the standard specifies
  • Legally sellable in that market
  • Defensible, if it is recorded

Conformity does NOT mean

  • Safe for your users in your context
  • Safe for a nursery, if it was written for adults
  • Safe with wet hands, if it was tested dry
  • That you can stop testing with real users
A standard is a floor: Conform, then test with your own users on your own task, and record both.

An answer that treats conformity as the end of the designer's duty has missed the point of the statement.

How this is tested — how standards help a designer ensure the well-being, health and safety of users. It comes up two ways:

Paper 1 — multiple choice

  • Identify what a stated standard clause achieves.
  • Pick the strongest control from a safety hierarchy.

Paper 2 — analysing a product

  • Evaluate how standards help a designer make a named product safe.
  • Explain why a warning label is the weakest safety control.
The trap: Answering "standards keep users safe" and stopping. The marks are for WHAT a standard converts a duty into, and for knowing that it is a minimum rather than a target.
