The triple bottom line measures a product against people, profit and planet. Obsolescence is where the three pull hardest against each other, because a shorter life is usually good for one and bad for the other two.

Planned obsolescence is the only one that is a choice: Style and social obsolescence happen to a designer. Functional and technological can be designed against.

Each kind has a design answer
Functional → replaceable wear parts
Identify what wears out — a bearing, a seal, a battery — and make it reachable with standard tools, with the service data published.
Technological → open standards and offline function
A device that keeps its core function when the servers go away is still a product. One that does not is a subscription with a shell round it.
Style → restrained form, replaceable surfaces
Design what dates to be the part that can be changed: the fronts, the cover, the trim — not the carcass or the mechanism.
Planned → do not do it
There is no design technique here, only a decision. Repeat sales bought this way are paid for by the brand, and increasingly by regulation.
The argument a client will accept: Longevity is not only an environmental argument. A product that lasts builds the reputation the next product is sold on, avoids warranty cost, and increasingly avoids legal exposure as repairability rules spread.
An answer that gives the commercial case as well as the environmental one is much stronger.
How this is tested — how obsolescence affects the triple bottom line, and identifying products it has affected. It comes up two ways:
Paper 1 — multiple choice
- Classify a described case as planned, functional, technological, style or social.
- Identify which of the three Ps a stated effect falls on.
Paper 2 — analysing a product
- Analyse the obsolescence affecting a named product against the TBL.
- Explain how a product could be designed to resist it.
The trap: Calling everything planned obsolescence. A bearing that is expensive to replace is FUNCTIONAL obsolescence made worse by a design decision; planned obsolescence is a deliberate limit on life.
A washing machine's drum bearing fails at six years, and the bearing is pressed into a welded drum that costs more than the machine to replace. Analyse this against the triple bottom line and explain how it could be designed out.
