Key concepts in Media texts

Key Idea: Media texts are written for the public: articles, opinion columns, reviews, interviews, speeches, brochures, and news reports. Each has its own reader, tone and parts.

Article

  • For a general reader: informative but lively. No greeting, no sign-off.
  • Parts: headline, hook, first point, second point, conclusion.
  • {{¿Qué hay detrás de…? … En definitiva,…|What lies behind…? … In short,…}}

Opinion column

  • Your own view, in the first person, to persuade.
  • Parts: title, your stance, the argument, a rhetorical question or counterpoint, conclusion.
  • {{creo, defiendo, estoy convencido/a|I believe, I defend, I am convinced}}
  • Make your stance clear early. Never bury it.

Review

  • Describe a work, then judge it, then recommend it.
  • Name its strengths and one weakness, without spoiling the ending.
  • {{me ha encantado, lo mejor es…|I loved it, the best thing is…}}

Interview

  • A conversation written down, semi-formal with usted. Don't mix in tú.
  • Parts: introduction, three questions with their answers, closing thanks.

Speech

  • Spoken to an audience, with vosotros.
  • Parts: address, hook, points, call to action, a memorable close.
  • {{Buenos días a todos. … Muchas gracias.|Good morning everyone. … Thank you very much.}}
  • Signposts such as {{en primer lugar, por último|first of all, finally}}, rhetorical questions and repetition.

Brochure

  • Persuasive and practical, for a wide audience.
  • Parts: title or slogan, intro, sections, details, call to action.
  • Headings, bullet points, short sentences and imperatives: {{¡Descubre! … ¡Apúntate ya!|Discover! … Sign up now!}}

News report

  • Reports an event in the third person and the past tense. Facts only.
  • Parts: headline, lead, details, a quote, closing.
  • {{Ayer tuvo lugar… «…», declaró…|Yesterday … took place… “…,” declared…}}
The column and the review speak as «I». The news report stays objective.

Which text type ends with a recommendation? The review.

Which one has no greeting and no sign-off? The article.

Which tense does a news report use? The past.

Which register does an interview use? Usted: semi-formal.

How does a speech end? With a memorable close and «Muchas gracias».
