System 1 is quick, automatic and effortless — reading a word, sensing a mood, doing 2 + 2. System 2 is slow, deliberate and tiring — solving 17 × 24, planning a route, weighing an argument. Most of the time System 1 runs the show.

Key idea: The two systems trade speed for accuracy — and System 1's shortcuts are where many biases come from.
Take a tricky quiz question: 'A bat and ball cost £1.10; the bat costs £1 more than the ball; how much is the ball?' System 1 shouts '10p' — fast and wrong. Only System 2, if engaged, works out the right answer (5p). Many biases happen because System 1 answers before System 2 checks.
Go further — higher-level insight: Bias isn't stupidity — it's efficiency backfiring. System 1's shortcuts are usually helpful and fast; they only mislead in situations designed to trip them up. This reframes bias as the cost of an otherwise adaptive system.

Key idea: The theory is influential and useful, but the 'two systems' may be a simplification.
So dual processing is a useful, well-supported framework for understanding fast vs slow thinking, but treating System 1 and System 2 as two literal 'things' in the brain is probably too neat — they are better seen as two modes of processing.
Watch out: Don't call System 1 'bad'. It is fast and usually right. The point is knowing when to slow down and let System 2 check.
