In one line: A schema is a mental shortcut — a package of knowledge that tells us what to expect, so we don't process everything from scratch.
A schema is like a folder in the mind. You have a 'restaurant' schema (menus, waiters, paying), a 'classroom' schema, a 'dog' schema. Each stores what usually happens.
Schemas belong to the cognitive approach — they explain behaviour through mental processes. They make thinking fast and efficient, but because they fill in gaps with what we expect, they can also distort what we notice and remember.

We pay more attention to things that fit our schema, and may ignore things that don't.
Storing
Information is fitted into the existing framework, so odd details get smoothed to match expectations.
Recall
When remembering, we rebuild the event using the schema — often adding things that 'should' have been there.

Take someone recalling a visit to a doctor's office they only glanced at. Their 'doctor's office' schema makes them confidently 'remember' seeing a certificate on the wall and medical books — even if there were none. The schema filled the gaps. This links to the concept of bias: memory is reconstructed, not replayed.
Worked example you could use: In a classic illustration, people shown an office later recalled 'books' that were not there — their schema added them. You may cite this kind of study as an example of schema-driven memory, in your own words. No need to memorise the details — the mechanism is the point.
Go further — higher-level insight: Schema theory explains both skill and error. The same shortcut that lets an expert read a situation instantly also produces predictable memory distortions and stereotypes — a single mechanism behind fast thinking AND bias.

Key idea: Schema theory is powerful and well-supported, but it describes more than it precisely explains.
So schema theory is strong on what happens (expectations reshape memory) but weaker on the precise how. A good evaluation says both: well-evidenced and useful, but somewhat vague and hard to test directly.
Watch out: Don't overclaim. Schemas influence memory; they don't fully determine it. People can and do notice schema-inconsistent information, especially when it is striking.
