What 'the conversation' is: After your prepared presentation, the teacher asks follow-up questions — this is la conversazione, the interactive part of the Individual Oral (IA). It mainly builds Criterion C (Interaction). Your job is to sustain it: develop each answer, give opinions, ask back, and react naturally. Learn the building-block phrases below, then use them in the sections that follow.
HL oral — a literary extract: At HL, the individual oral is based on a LITERARY EXTRACT. Unlike SL (which uses a visual stimulus / photo), at HL your individual oral starts from a short estratto taken from one of the two literary works you studied (see Unit 8 → 8.2.2). You describe, analyse and relate the extract to the work as a whole. The skill practised here — describe → interpret → connect — is exactly what you'll do with that extract.

Why this matters: A one-word answer like «Sì» gives the examiner almost nothing to mark and sinks your Interaction grade. These phrases turn a bare reply into a developed, two-way exchange — exactly what Criterion C rewards.
Develop, don't just answer: Examiners reward developed, justified answers, not bare facts. The reliable recipe in the conversation is: answer + reason («perché…») + example («per esempio…») + your own experience («nel mio caso…»). Then, where it fits, ask back to keep the exchange alive.
Phrases to develop an answer

Risposta debole (weak)
- «Sì.» — una sola parola come risposta.
- Un'opinione senza motivazione: «È bello.»
- Il silenzio quando la domanda è difficile.
Risposta forte (strong)
- «Sì, moltissimo, perché…» + esempio + esperienza personale.
- Opinione CON motivazione: «…, perché mi aiuta a staccare.»
- Un riempitivo + chiedere a propria volta: «Allora… e Lei?»
Link and react: Connectors and reactions make you sound interactive: quindi / perciò (therefore), inoltre (besides), tuttavia / però (however), and quick reactions like «È vero.» / «Esatto.». Use a couple in every answer.

IB-style task — what makes this answer score
Una risposta forte, passo dopo passo
- Clear answer first — «Sì, in realtà sì. Mi piace abitare qui…» The student answers directly, not with a bare «Sì».
- Reason + example — «…, perché c'è sempre qualcosa da fare… Per esempio, nel fine settimana andiamo spesso in piscina.» The «perché…» gives a reason, «per esempio…» adds a concrete example.
- Ask back — «E Lei, Le piace vivere in una grande città?» Handing the turn back keeps the conversation two-way and lifts the Interaction grade.
Conversation technique: Build every answer the same way: direct answer → «perché…» → «per esempio…» → (sometimes) «E Lei?». If a question surprises you, open with a filler like «Mmm, è una bella domanda. Allora…» to win a second — far better than silence.
Il compito — your task: Nella conversazione il professore chiede: «Ti piace fare sport?» Invece di dire solo «Sì», devi sviluppare e motivare la risposta — e tenere viva la conversazione.
Parla (o scrivi come esercizio) una risposta completa: risposta + «perché…» + «per esempio…» + esperienza personale + chiedere a propria volta.
