Why this matters: In Paper 1 you may be asked to write a news report; in Paper 2 you may read or hear one. Knowing its conventions and vocabulary is how you score Criterion C (Conceptual understanding) — choosing the right text type and tone.
How a news report is built: A news report follows a clear shape: a titolo (headline), an attacco (lead) that answers who, what, when, where, then a body giving the facts in decreasing order of importance, usually with an attributed quote. The register is objective — third person, past tense, no personal opinion.
The five W's the lead should answer
- Chi? — Who was involved?
- Che cosa? — What happened?
- Quando? — When did it happen?
- Dove? — Where did it happen?
- Perché / Come? — Why / how (often later in the body)?
Registro del servizio (do)
- Terza persona e tempo passato: «hanno partecipato», «si è svolto».
- Fatti attribuiti a una fonte: «secondo gli organizzatori».
- Citazioni fra virgolette con un verbo di dichiarazione.
Da evitare (avoid)
- Opinioni personali: «secondo me è stato bellissimo».
- Registro colloquiale o emotivo, come in un blog.
- Dati inventati senza una fonte.
Reporting verbs: Attribute what people say with a reporting verb: dichiarare (to state), affermare (to declare), spiegare (to explain), annunciare (to announce). «...», ha dichiarato il portavoce.

- The question — «Secondo il testo, a che cosa serviranno i fondi raccolti?»
- Find it in the text. Look for «i fondi»: «I fondi serviranno a comprare nuovi libri e computer per i più giovani.»

Reading technique: For a «secondo il testo» (according to the text) question, find the exact line — often inside a quote — that proves your answer; don't rely on memory or general knowledge.
Il compito — your task: Nella tua scuola è successo un evento importante (una gara, una festa, un nuovo progetto). Scrivi un servizio giornalistico per il giornale della scuola in cui racconti che cosa è successo in modo oggettivo.

Forward-looking close
End by looking ahead, objectively. «La prima raccolta è prevista per la primavera.»
