What 'etica' covers: Ethics (l'etica) sits in the theme Sharing the Planet. You need vocabulary to talk about right and wrong, moral dilemmas, values, duty and responsible behaviour — and to argue both sides of a choice. Learn the words below as a deck, then use them in the reading and writing sections.

Useful expression (Italian)English
È una questione di etica. It's a question of ethics.
It isn't easy to decide what is right.
Lo trovo ingiusto.I find that unfair.
Abbiamo tutti una responsabilità verso gli altri. We all have a responsibility towards others.
La mia coscienza mi dice che…My conscience tells me that…
Why this matters: This vocabulary turns up in every skill — a reading text about consumption, a listening interview about volunteering, a Paper 1 opinion piece, or your oral. Reusing the right topic words is how you score Criterion A (Language).

Argue both sides: Ethics questions are rarely black and white — examiners reward you for weighing up a choice. Around ethics, the common debates are: honesty vs self-interest, responsible vs cheap consumption, and how far our individual choices really matter. Take a position, but show you see the other side too.

Opinion & argument phrases

  • Secondo me… / Dal punto di vista etico… — In my opinion… / From an ethical point of view…
  • Trovo (in)giusto che… — I find it (un)fair that…
  • La cosa giusta sarebbe… — The right thing would be to…
  • Da un lato… dall'altro lato… — On the one hand… on the other hand…
  • Alla fine, quello che conta è… — In the end, what matters is…

Pro: fare la cosa giusta (the case for acting ethically)

Contro: le difficoltà (the obstacles)

Link your ideas: Connectors turn a list into an argument: inoltre (besides), tuttavia / però (however), quindi / perciò (therefore), anche se (although). Use at least two or three in any written answer, especially when arguing both sides.

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short blog — the kind of text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you. Read it once just for the general idea; don't worry about every word. Tap the audio button to hear it, or Mostra traduzione if you get stuck. Then we'll do one exam question together.
Da dove vengono i miei vestiti?: L'anno scorso ho iniziato a chiedermi da dove venissero davvero i miei vestiti. Prima compravo magliette molto economiche senza pensarci troppo.

  2. Find it in the text. — and just before it: «persone che lavorano in condizioni pessime.»
Reading technique: For a «secondo il testo» (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer — don't rely on memory or general knowledge.

Blog structure — 5 steps

1

Catchy title

A title, often a question. «Sai da dove viene la tua maglietta?»

2

Greeting + topic

Greet the reader and say what the post is about. «Ciao a tutti! Oggi voglio parlarvi di…»

3

Your experience

Describe your old habits in the past (imperfetto). «Prima compravo solo la cosa più economica…»

4

Two or three tips

Give advice using the imperative. «Informatevi sulle marche», «comprate solo il necessario», «donate o riciclate».

5

Motivating close

Finish with an encouraging line. «Cominciate questa settimana! Ogni piccola scelta conta.»

Title → Greeting → Experience → Tips → Close

Modello: i 5 passi in azione

Il blog scritto, passo dopo passo

  1. Sai da dove viene la tua maglietta? Io a lungo non lo sapevo.
  2. Ciao a tutti!
Perché prende punti — why it scores: This answer hits all three Paper 1 criteria — here's what earns each one:

A — Language /12

  • Range of tenses: imperfetto «compravo», imperativo «informatevi»
  • Connectors: «tuttavia», «perciò»
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: describes past consumption AND gives advice
  • Ideas developed with concrete examples

C — Conceptual /6

  • Blog conventions: a catchy title
  • Direct address: «vi do», «cominciate»
  • A persuasive, personal tone

Comprensione orale — il volontariato di Laura

Paper 2 tests listening (25 marks): you hear 3 short clips, each played twice, and you never see the words. Read the questions first, then listen and reveal the answers.

  1. Perché Laura ha iniziato a fare volontariato? (Why did she start volunteering?)
  2. Laura riceve soldi per il suo aiuto? (Does she get paid?)

Hi, I'm Laura. Two years ago I started volunteering, after seeing an elderly neighbour who lived alone and had no one to help her. I felt it was my duty to do something. Now I do her shopping twice a week and, above all, I keep her company. I don't get paid for it: for me, helping others is a more important value than being rich.

[2 marks]
