Key concepts in Identities

Key Idea: Identities is about who you are: your lifestyle, your health, your beliefs, the groups you belong to and the languages you speak. Each lesson gives you German words and a debate to form an opinion on.

Phrases for every lesson

  • {{Meiner Meinung nach… / Ich glaube, dass…|In my opinion… / I think that…}}
  • {{Einerseits… andererseits…|On the one hand… on the other hand…}}
  • {{jedoch, deshalb|however, therefore}}

Lifestyles

  • {{der Lebensstil, der Tagesablauf, das Wohlbefinden|lifestyle, daily routine, well-being}}
  • {{früh aufstehen, abschalten, auf sich achten|to get up early, to switch off, to look after yourself}}
  • Debate: busy city life or a simpler, slower life?

Health & well-being

  • {{die Gesundheit, die Ernährung, Sport treiben, gut schlafen|health, diet, to exercise, to sleep well}}
  • {{der Stress, die psychische Gesundheit|stress, mental health}}
  • Debate: good habits or bad habits, for body and mind?

Beliefs & values

  • {{die Überzeugung, der Wert, der Glaube|belief, value, faith}}
  • {{der Respekt, die Toleranz, zusammenleben|respect, tolerance, to live together}}
  • Debate: tradition or change? Give your view without judging others.
  • Contrast two ideas with {{obwohl|although}}.

Subcultures

  • {{die Subkultur, die Jugendkultur, die Identität|subculture, youth culture, identity}}
  • {{zu einer Gruppe gehören, sich ausdrücken, dazugehören|to belong to a group, to express yourself, to fit in}}
  • Debate: belonging and self-expression, or the pressure to fit in?
  • Always present subcultures in a positive light: identity and respect.

Language & identity

  • {{die Muttersprache, die Minderheitensprache, die Zugehörigkeit|mother tongue, minority language, belonging}}
  • {{zweisprachig sein, eine Sprache bewahren|to be bilingual, to preserve a language}}
  • Debate: why learn languages? Why do mother tongues and minority languages matter?
When you write on these topics, plan a catchy start, your ideas and a strong ending, and reuse the lesson's words.

What does «abschalten» mean? To switch off.

How do you say "mental health"? Die psychische Gesundheit.

How do you talk about beliefs that are not yours? With respect. You say what you think, but you do not judge.

What is «die Minderheitensprache»? A minority language.

Which connector means "although"? Obwohl.
