Konjunktiv II — the polite, hypothetical mood: Konjunktiv II (the subjunctive II / conditional) is the German verb mood for things that are hypothetical, wished-for or politely framed — not stated as fact.

What you learn in this micro

  • How to build it — the everyday form is simply würde + Infinitiv.
  • A handful of common verbs have their own short form instead: wäre, hätte, könnte.
  • Job 1: being polite — Könnten Sie…? Ich hätte gern…
  • Job 2: talking about the unreal — Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich…
der Konjunktiv II
Subjunctive II — the mood for the hypothetical, the wished-for and the polite
der Indikativ
the indicative — the ordinary mood for stating facts (ich habe, ich bin)
würde + Infinitiv
the everyday Konjunktiv II form: würde + the infinitive at the end (ich würde gehen)
die Höflichkeitsform
the polite form — softening requests and offers (Könnten Sie…?)
der irreale Wunsch
the unreal wish — what you'd want but isn't the case (Wenn ich nur mehr Zeit hätte!)
der Bedingungssatz
the conditional wenn sentence — if X were true, Y would happen
Why it matters: Konjunktiv II is the single clearest marker of polite, mature German. Replacing a blunt Ich will einen Kaffee with Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee instantly lifts the register of your speaking and writing — exactly what Criterion A and Criterion C reward.

Default: würde + Infinitiv. Six verbs you just know.: Build Konjunktiv II in two ways: the everyday würde + Infinitiv, or a short synthetic form for six very common verbs.

The two ways

  • (1) Everyday form: conjugate würde and send the Infinitiv to the end (ich würde spielen).
  • (2) Synthetic form for a short list of very common verbs — learn these by heart: sein → wäre, haben → hätte.
  • The modals: können → könnte, müssen → müsste, mögen → möchte, wollen → wollte.
  • How the synthetic forms are made: the Präteritum stem + Umlaut (where the vowel takes one; wollen → wollte has none) + -e endings.
Personwürde + Infinitiv (spielen)sein → wärehaben → hätte
ichwürde spielenwärehätte
duwürdest spielenwärsthättest
er / sie / eswürde spielenwärehätte
wirwürden spielenwärenhätten
ihrwürdet spielenwärthättet
sie / Siewürden spielenwärenhätten
InfinitivKonjunktiv II (ich)Hinweis / Tip
seinwäresynthetic — use this, never würde sein
habenhättesynthetic — use this, never würde haben
könnenkönntemodal: Könnten Sie…? = could you…?
müssenmüsstemodal: ich müsste = I would have to
mögenmöchtemöchte = would like (the polite want)
werdenwürdethe helper for everyone else: würde + Infinitiv
The two-track rule: Track 1 (almost every verb): würde + Infinitiv (ich würde lernen). Track 2 (six high-frequency verbs): the short form — wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste, möchte, wollte. Never combine them: it's ich würde gehen OR ich wäre, never ich würde sein.

Two jobs: be polite, or talk about the unreal: As a B-level student you need Konjunktiv II for two things: politeness and the hypothetical. Spot the shape and the form follows.

(1) Politeness — soften a request or offer

  • Könnten Sie…?
  • Ich hätte gern…
  • Würden Sie bitte…?

(2) The hypothetical — wishes and if situations that aren't real

  • Ich würde gern…
  • An deiner Stelle würde ich…
  • Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich…

Die zwei Aufgaben

  • Höflich bitten — Könnten Sie mir helfen? (Could you help me?)
  • Höflich bestellen — Ich hätte gern eine Suppe. (I would like a soup.)
  • Wunsch — Ich würde gern nach Wien fahren. (I would like to go to Vienna.)
  • Ratschlag — An deiner Stelle würde ich früher schlafen gehen. (If I were you, I'd go to bed earlier.)
  • Irreale Bedingung — Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen. (If I were rich, I'd travel.)
wenn …, würde …: In an unreal wenn-sentence, the wenn-clause sends its verb to the end and the main clause usually takes würde + Infinitiv: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lesen. Notice hätte (synthetic) in the wenn-part and würde lesen in the main part.
Konjunktiv II, sentence by sentence: Here are short sentences that each show Konjunktiv II at work — some polite, some hypothetical.

How to use the sentences

  • The note in brackets reminds you which verb form is doing the job.
  • Read each once, then tap Übersetzung anzeigen for the English or the audio button to hear it.
  • Watch würde + Infinitiv alongside the short forms wäre, hätte, könnte, möchte.

Konjunktiv II in Aktion

Die Formen, Satz für Satz

  1. Ich würde gern mehr Sport treiben, aber mir fehlt die Zeit.
  2. Könnten Sie mir bitte den Weg zum Bahnhof zeigen?
  3. An deiner Stelle würde ich mit dem Lehrer sprechen.
  4. Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich um die Welt reisen.
  5. Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee, und ich möchte auch ein Stück Kuchen.
Build it out loud: For most verbs, just say würde + the infinitive (würde reisen, würde lernen). For the six high-frequency ones, reach straight for the short form — wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste, möchte, wollte — because they appear in almost every polite or hypothetical sentence.

The slips to watch for: Two mistakes dominate. Compare the right version with the typical mistake.

The two mistakes

  • (1) Saying würde sein or würde haben instead of the short forms wäre / hätte.
  • (2) Forgetting the Infinitiv goes to the end with würde: Ich würde gehen nach Hause is wrong → Ich würde nach Hause gehen is right.

Richtig

  • Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
  • Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.
  • Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?

Typischer Fehler

  • Ich würde haben gern einen Kaffee.
  • Wenn ich Zeit würde haben, ich komme.
  • Sie können mir helfen?
Short forms + infinitive at the end: Keep two habits: reach for the short forms (wäre, hätte, könnte) for those six verbs, and with würde push the Infinitiv to the very end of the clause. Get those right and your Konjunktiv II will read like a native's.
