What an 'Essay' is: An essay (der Essay / die Erörterung) is a professional text type, like the report and the proposal. It is a formal, impersonal text that argues a debatable topic logically, for a reader who expects reasoned discussion.

How an essay works

1

A debatable topic

It presents a topic people disagree about.

2

For and against

It weighs the arguments for and against.

3

A reasoned opinion

It ends with a reasoned opinion.

Debatable topic → for and against → reasoned opinion

Learn the phrases: Learn the connectors and framing phrases below. They are what makes a piece read like an essay rather than a chat.
der Essay / die Erörterung
the essay (argumentative)
das Thema / die Fragestellung
the topic / the question at issue
das Argument (für / gegen)
the argument (for / against)
die Einleitung
the introduction
der Hauptteil
the main body
der Schluss / das Fazit
the conclusion
einerseits … andererseits
on the one hand … on the other hand
der/die Befürworter(in)
the supporter / advocate
der/die Kritiker(in)
the critic
eine begründete Meinung
a reasoned opinion
sachlich / unpersönlich
objective / impersonal
abwägen
to weigh up (the arguments)
zu dem Schluss kommen, dass …
to come to the conclusion that …
Useful expression (German)English
Heutzutage wird darüber diskutiert, ob …Nowadays there is debate about whether …
Einerseits behaupten die Befürworter, dass …On the one hand, supporters claim that …
Andererseits halten die Kritiker dagegen, dass …On the other hand, critics object that …
Dennoch sollte man bedenken, dass …Nevertheless, one should consider that …
Abschließend bin ich der Meinung, dass …In conclusion, I am of the opinion that …
Why this matters: The examiner can tell an essay from any other text by its register (formal, impersonal) and its structure (introduction → both sides → reasoned conclusion). Reusing these connectors accurately is exactly what scores Criterion A (Language) and Criterion C (Conceptual understanding).

Build a balanced argument: An essay is judged on balance: you must present both sides before you take a position.

Plan the argument

1

Pick a debatable topic

For example abolishing homework, social media, or online vs in-person learning.

2

Argue both sides

Give one or two developed reasons on each side.

3

Conclude

End with a reasoned opinion — not a rant.

Topic → both sides → reasoned opinion

Framing phrases (use these to structure the argument)

  • Heutzutage wird darüber diskutiert, ob… — Nowadays there is debate about whether…
  • Einerseits… andererseits… — On the one hand… on the other hand…
  • Befürworter argumentieren, dass… — Supporters argue that…
  • Kritiker wenden ein, dass… — Critics object that…
  • Abschließend bin ich der Meinung, dass… — In conclusion, I am of the opinion that…

Argumente dafür (for abolishing homework)

  • Ohne Hausaufgaben bleibt mehr Zeit für Familie, Sport und Erholung.
  • Nicht alle Schülerinnen und Schüler bekommen zu Hause Hilfe.
  • Zu viele Aufgaben verursachen Stress.

Argumente dagegen (against)

Stay objective: An essay uses an impersonal, objective tone: prefer „man“ and „die Befürworter / die Kritiker“ over „ich finde…“ in the body. Save the first-person opinion („Abschließend bin ich der Meinung…“) for the conclusion. Link ideas with dennoch (nevertheless), jedoch (however) and folglich (consequently).

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short model essay — the kind of argumentative text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you. Then we'll do one exam question together.

How to read it

  • Read it once for the overall structure (introduction → both sides → conclusion).
  • Don't worry about every word.
  • Tap the audio button to hear it, or Übersetzung anzeigen if you get stuck.

abschaffen
to abolish
die Erholung
rest / recovery
festigen
to consolidate
selbstständig
independent(ly)
überfordern
to overburden / overwhelm

IB-style task — eine Frage aus Paper 2

Eine Frage, Schritt für Schritt

  2. Find it in the text.
Reading technique: For a „dem Text zufolge“ (according to the text) question, find the exact line that proves your answer. In an essay, the writer's own opinion is almost always in the conclusion („Abschließend…“ / „Zusammenfassend…“), not the body.
Register und Länge — register and length: Formelles, unpersönliches Register. Schreibe zwischen 450 und 600 Wörter.

Essay structure — 5 steps

1

Frame the topic

Open impersonally, presenting the topic as a debate. „Heutzutage wird darüber diskutiert, ob…“

2

Arguments FOR

Give one or two developed points in favour. „Einerseits argumentieren die Befürworter, dass…“

3

Arguments AGAINST

Give one or two developed points against. „Andererseits halten die Kritiker dagegen, dass…“

4

Weigh it up

Add a nuance that balances the two sides. „Dennoch sollte man bedenken, dass…“

5

Reasoned conclusion

End with your own reasoned opinion. „Abschließend bin ich der Meinung, dass…“

Frame → For → Against → Weigh up → Reasoned conclusion

Modell: die 5 Schritte in Aktion

Der fertige Essay, Schritt für Schritt

Warum es punktet — why it scores: This answer hits all three Paper 1 criteria — here's what earns each one:

A — Language /12

  • Range of structures: „wird diskutiert“ (passive), Konjunktiv „sollte“
  • Connectors: „einerseits… andererseits“, „dennoch“
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: both sides argued AND a reasoned conclusion
  • Ideas developed with reasons, not just listed

C — Conceptual /6

  • Essay conventions: an impersonal opening
  • Balanced structure before the opinion
  • A formal, objective register throughout

Hörverstehen — eine Debatte in der Klasse

Paper 2 tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips, each played twice, and you never see the words. Read the questions first, then listen and reveal the answers.

  1. Welche zwei Seiten wägt Lena ab? (Which two sides does Lena weigh up?)
  2. Welche begründete Meinung gibt Lena am Ende? (What reasoned opinion does she give at the end?)

Hi, I'm Lena. Nowadays there is debate about whether school should start later in the morning. On the one hand, supporters claim that teenagers have a different sleep rhythm and would concentrate better at nine o'clock. On the other hand, critics object that lessons would then go on until later in the afternoon and there would be less time for hobbies. Nevertheless, one should consider that tired students hardly learn anything. In conclusion, I am of the opinion that a school start at half past eight would be a good compromise.
