Games and screens

  • les jeux vidéo face aux romans
  • une salle de réalité virtuelle, l'e-sport
  • la téléréalité

Reading and listening

  • les livres audio et les podcasts
  • le manga et la bande dessinée
  • le roman policier

Going out

  • un festival de cinéma (le FESPACO)
  • des concerts dans un salon
  • la fête de la musique

Big questions behind this topic (IB guide, theme Human ingenuity)

Step diagram: How to argue about a form of entertainment
Debates on video games, VR and reality TV, and the Paper 1 tasks on them, follow this chain.
Link your ideas: Connectors lift your answer from a list into an argument: de plus (besides), cependant (however), par conséquent (therefore), bien que (although). Use at least two or three in any written answer.

Read like Paper 2: Here is a short opinion article, the kind of text Paper 2 (Reading) gives you.

How to read it

  • Read it once just for the general idea; don't worry about every word.
  • Tap the audio button to hear it, or Voir la traduction if you get stuck.
  • Then we'll do one exam question together.

  2. Decide, then hunt for proof. Scan for where new songs are found: La plupart découvrent leurs nouvelles chansons sur Internet, et non plus à la radio.
  3. The answer — Faux. Copy the exact words that prove it — that quote is what earns the mark, not the word 'Faux' on its own.
Reading technique: Vrai/Faux + justifiez: For Vrai/Faux + justifiez, a tick alone scores zero: you must quote the exact words from the text that prove it. A justification with the wrong or padded-out words is also rejected.
Reading technique: vocabulaire en contexte: The same care applies to vocabulaire en contexte questions: copy the single exact word the text uses (e.g. find the word that means 'façon').

Interview (entretien) structure — 5 steps

1

Présentation de l'invité

Introduce the person and why readers should care.

2

Question 1 + réponse

Start with the festival itself. Lay it out as question, dash, answer, and make the answer give real detail.

3

Question 2 + réponse

Ask why: the answer gives the aim and makes readers want to come. Pourquoi avoir choisi ce thème ? — Parce que la musique rassemble les gens…

4

Question 3 + réponse

Ask a personal question so the guest tells an experience in the passé composé. Qu'est-ce que ça t'a apporté ? — J'ai appris à travailler en équipe.

5

Clôture

Thank the guest and end with a hook for readers.

Why it works: A strong interview does this for each of the three Paper 1 criteria:

A — Language /12

  • Range of tenses: présent consiste, passé composé j'ai appris, imparfait voulions
  • Connectors: parce que, comme
  • Topic vocabulary, used accurately

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: presents the festival's nature AND programme
  • Sets it clearly in the town and signals the writer is an organiser
  • Each answer is developed with concrete detail

C — Conceptual /6

  • Interview conventions: an introduction of the interviewee
  • A clear question–answer layout (Question / Réponse)
  • Varied question forms and a clear closing line
Écoute comme en Paper 2: Paper 2 also tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips and answer questions — but you never see the words. Here's one, simplified — a guide on a tour. Play it, answer, then reveal the transcript to check.

Listen to Yasmine welcome a small group on an evening tour of a famous opera house. Try to answer before you reveal the transcript — that's how Paper 2 Listening works.

(What will the visitors discover at the end of the tour?)

Good evening everyone, and welcome to the opera house. You're lucky, because this tour isn't open to the general public. My name is Yasmine and I'll be your guide tonight. This building is known worldwide as a symbol of classical dance. Before we go in, look at its façade and its statues evoking the arts. Inside, you'll admire the grand staircase and a huge ceiling fresco. Follow me: we'll now discover the backstage area, where a whole team of professionals works.

Listening technique: Read the question first, then listen for that one detail — you don't need to catch every word. In the real exam you hear each clip twice.
