En bref: Un personnage ne se résume pas à l’étiquette qu’on lui colle : tu le lis dans ce qu’il dit, dans ce qu’il fait et dans la façon dont les autres réagissent — jamais dans une simple affirmation.

« C’était un homme généreux. » Voilà l’auteur qui te le dit tout net.

Mais compare : un personnage qui, sans un mot, glisse son unique pièce dans la main d’un mendiant. Personne ne l’a qualifié de « généreux », et pourtant tu le sais — tu l’as lu dans son geste. C’est ça, la caractérisation : l’auteur te fait CONNAÎTRE un personnage, soit en te le disant, soit en te laissant le déduire. Repère les deux voies :

La caractérisation directe

L’auteur t’affirme le trait : « Elle était froide et orgueilleuse. » C’est rapide, mais c’est SON regard qu’on te sert. Tu dois le prendre sur parole.

La caractérisation indirecte

L’auteur te montre le personnage — ce qu’il dit, ce qu’il fait, comment les autres le regardent — et te laisse conclure. Pense à Harpagon chez Molière : personne n’a besoin d’écrire « avare », ses répliques suffisent.

Le geste clé: Demande-toi d’où tu tiens le trait : d’une caractérisation directe ou d’une caractérisation indirecte ? Et surtout, dans un dialogue, lis le sous-entendu : ce qu’un personnage veut dire sans le dire.
