One marsh, three reactions: The town wants to drain Reed Marsh and build 300 homes on it.
Same plan. Three very different reactions.
Maya
- Needs a home she can afford.
- Delighted.
Tom
- Counts the marsh's birds every spring.
- Furious.
The farmer next door
- Her fields sit below the marsh.
- Worried about floods.
Each of them sees the plan through their own perspective.
The points to remember
- A perspective is how one person sees and understands a situation.
- It is built from assumptions, values and beliefs.
- These can be personal (from your own life) or collective (shared by a group).
- So people take many different positions on the same issue.
- Perspectives shape people's choices and actions.
Roots
- What you take for granted (assumptions)
- What matters to you (values)
- What you think is true (beliefs)
View
- Your perspective: how you see the plan
Action
- Maya signs a petition for the homes
- Tom writes to the paper against them
Personal
- From your own life: Maya's years of waiting.
Collective
- Shared by a group: Tom's whole birdwatching club.
Remember it as: Roots, view, action: what you assume, value and believe decides what you do.

A perspective grows from three roots. They sound alike, but they are different things.
| Root | What it is | At Reed Marsh | Quick test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assumption | something taken for granted, never checked | Maya: 'There will always be other places for birds.' | Has anyone checked it? |
| Value | what a person feels has worth and matters | Tom: 'Wildlife matters more than new homes.' | Is it about what matters? |
| Belief | what a person holds to be true or right | The farmer: 'Draining the marsh will flood my fields.' | Is it a claim about what is true? |
Name the root in your answer: Write 'Tom values wildlife' or 'the farmer believes her fields will flood', not just 'Tom thinks'.
