Text F — The four-day school week: Several rural districts in the United States have adopted a four-day school week, largely to cut costs and attract teachers. Supporters claim the extra day gives families flexibility and reduces absences. However, a recent study found that pupils' progress in maths was marginally slower, and that working parents often struggled to find affordable childcare on the fifth day. Researchers stress that the effects are modest, but they urge districts to weigh the savings against the impact on learning.
