In one line: The fastest way to improve is to compare a weak, a middling and a top-band analysis of the same line — the gap between them IS your mark scheme.

You've learned every ingredient this unit; now see them plated up at three levels.

🍴 Weak = feature-spotting (‘there is a metaphor’). Middling = technique + effect (‘the metaphor creates fear’). Top-band = technique + effect + audience + combined + EVALUATED, in a clean PEAL paragraph. Read all three, and the jump becomes obvious — and copyable.

The three levels

1

Weak — feature-spotting

Names a device, no effect: ‘there is a metaphor’. Little credit.

2

Middling — technique + effect

‘The metaphor makes it scary.’ Some credit — but no depth.

3

Strong — the full move

Technique → effect → audience → combined → EVALUATED, in PEAL. Top band.

4

Copy the top

Notice exactly what the strong version adds — then do that.

The key move: Learn the ladder: feature-spotting → technique+effect → full evaluated PEAL. Always aim your writing at the top rung, using every analytical move you've built in this topic.

Why it matters in the exam: Comparing sample responses is how examiners are trained. Seeing the levels side by side makes the difference between bands concrete — so you know precisely what to add to move up across all four Paper 1 criteria.
IB-style questionAnalyse[8 marks]

Three analyses of the same line, worst to best: “Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul.” (an original paraphrase-style line)

Watch out: Don't settle at ‘middling’ — technique + effect alone is only mid-band. Add audience, combination and evaluation to reach the top.
