The big idea: At the end of development the design has to be communicated to whoever will make it: dimensions, scale and assembly, with nothing left to be guessed.

The test is simple — could somebody who has never seen your prototype build it from these drawings alone?

Each drawing type with the job it does. For manufacture the ones that matter are orthographic and exploded.

What makes a drawing actually buildable

Every part on a separate view

A component drawn only inside the assembly cannot be made. Each part gets its own orthographic set with its own dimensions.

Say what it is made of

Material and finish belong on the drawing, not in a paragraph elsewhere. The person cutting it does not have your folder.

Show the joint, at a larger scale

Anything that fits inside something else needs a detail view. The pivot at 1:1 answers questions the 1:5 assembly cannot.

Number the parts and list them

An exploded view with numbered balloons and a parts list turns a picture into an instruction.

A render is not a manufacturing drawing: A photorealistic image has no dimensions, no scale, no section and no parts list.

It is useful for presenting a solution — which is the NEXT statement, and a different job.

How this is tested — creating detailed drawings that communicate dimensions, scale and assembly. It comes up two ways:

Paper 1 — multiple choice

  • Identify the drawing type needed for a stated purpose.
  • Pick what is missing from a described drawing.

Paper 2 — analysing a product

  • Describe the drawings needed to manufacture a named product.
  • Explain why dimensions are taken from a datum.
The trap: Offering an isometric view as the manufacturing drawing. Isometric shows what it looks like in three dimensions; it cannot carry a reliable set of dimensions, and it has no sections.
