The big idea: The linear economy runs in one direction: take, make, use, throw away. Value is created once and destroyed once, and every product needs a fresh extraction.

A circular economy is a closed loop: what was disposal becomes a return, and resources are continuously repurposed.

The linear chain with a bin at the end, then the return, then the loops — and why the tight ones are worth far more.

Linear

  • Take → make → distribute → use → dispose
  • Value created once, destroyed once
  • Every product needs a fresh extraction
  • Works only while materials are cheap and there is somewhere to put waste
  • The product is designed to be sold, and nothing more

Circular

  • Take → make → distribute → use → return
  • Value kept in the system, sometimes for decades
  • New extraction only for what the loops cannot supply
  • Works because the return is designed in, not hoped for
  • The product is designed to be returned, and the business wants it back
Recycling a linear product does not make it circular: A product designed to be thrown away and then partly rescued at the end is still linear.

Circular means the return was designed in: bolted rather than glued, standard parts, materials that separate, and a business model that has a reason to collect it.

Recycling is the LAST loop: It keeps only the material and destroys the shape, the assembly and all the energy that went into making them.

An answer that treats recycling as the definition of a circular economy has the hierarchy backwards, and it is the commonest error in this topic.

How this is tested — comparing and contrasting a linear approach and the circular economy. It comes up two ways:

Paper 1 — multiple choice

  • Identify a stage that differs between the two systems.
  • Pick the loop that preserves the most value.

Paper 2 — analysing a product

  • Compare a linear and a circular approach for a named product.
  • Explain why recycling alone is not a circular economy.
The trap: Equating circular with recycling. Recycling is the last and weakest loop; maintenance, reuse and repair keep far more and are what a circular design makes possible.
