Recycling a linear product does not make it circular: A product designed to be thrown away and then partly rescued at the end is still linear.
Circular means the return was designed in: bolted rather than glued, standard parts, materials that separate, and a business model that has a reason to collect it.

Recycling is the LAST loop: It keeps only the material and destroys the shape, the assembly and all the energy that went into making them.
An answer that treats recycling as the definition of a circular economy has the hierarchy backwards, and it is the commonest error in this topic.
How this is tested — comparing and contrasting a linear approach and the circular economy. It comes up two ways:
Paper 1 — multiple choice
- Identify a stage that differs between the two systems.
- Pick the loop that preserves the most value.
Paper 2 — analysing a product
- Compare a linear and a circular approach for a named product.
- Explain why recycling alone is not a circular economy.
The trap: Equating circular with recycling. Recycling is the last and weakest loop; maintenance, reuse and repair keep far more and are what a circular design makes possible.
