La idea clave: Comparar dos realidades —de forma explícita con ‘como’, o identificándolas sin más— convierte una idea abstracta en algo que el lector puede ver y sentir, y orienta cómo la interpreta.

‘Sus manos eran dos pájaros asustados.’ En seis palabras sabes exactamente qué sentía esa persona: nerviosismo, fragilidad, ganas de escapar.

Nadie te ha dicho ‘estaba nerviosa’. El autor no ha explicado la emoción: la ha hecho visible al ponerla sobre otra cosa —unos pájaros— que ya te transmite todo eso. Eso es el lenguaje figurado. Compara dos realidades para volver concreto lo abstracto. Distingue las dos formas básicas:

Un ejemplo claro de cada una

Símil

Compara dos realidades de forma explícita, con una marca visible —‘como’, ‘cual’, ‘parecía’—: ‘Se quedó frío como el mármol’. Al mantener el ‘como’, señala que es una comparación y deja algo de distancia entre las dos realidades.

Metáfora

Identifica una realidad con otra directamente, sin ‘como’: ‘Es el sol de la casa’. No dice que se parezca al sol: dice que ES el sol. Esa identificación total resulta más intensa que el símil y funde ambas realidades en una sola imagen.

El paso clave: Separa lo que se compara: el tenor (lo que el autor describe) y el vehículo (la imagen que le presta sus rasgos), y interpreta qué rasgos se transfieren de uno a otro. Ahí está el significado, no en la etiqueta.
