Key choices in observation
Naturalistic vs controlled
Naturalistic = in a real setting (high ecological validity); controlled = in a set-up situation (more control).
Covert vs overt
Covert = people don't know they're watched (natural behaviour, but ethical issues); overt = they know (ethical, but may act differently).
Participant vs non-participant
Participant = the researcher joins the group; non-participant = they watch from outside.

Take studying helping behaviour. A naturalistic, covert, non-participant observation records whether passers-by help someone who drops shopping — real behaviour, unaware. Using a clear coding scheme (what counts as 'helping') makes the measurement systematic.
Go further — higher-level insight: Knowing you're watched changes behaviour. When people know they are observed (overt), they may act differently — the observer effect. Covert observation avoids this but raises consent issues, so researchers must weigh natural data against ethics — a key evaluation point.
