In one line: There are reliable tricks that make people more likely to agree to a request — and they work on all of us.

Compliance is a sociocultural-approach idea. Compliance techniques are specific strategies that raise the chance someone says yes.

Salespeople, charities and campaigners use these on purpose. Understanding them links to the concept of causality: a well-chosen technique can cause agreement that a plain request would not.

Memory hook: Small trick, big 'yes'. Compliance techniques nudge people towards agreeing.

Key idea: Most techniques work by setting up the request so that saying yes feels natural or consistent.

Compliance techniques

1

Foot-in-the-door

Start with a tiny request; once someone agrees, they're more likely to agree to a bigger one (to stay consistent).

2

Door-in-the-face

Start with a big request they'll refuse; the smaller real request then seems reasonable by comparison.

3

Low-balling

Get agreement on a good deal, then reveal added costs; people often stick with their commitment.

4

Reciprocity

Give something small first (a free sample); people feel obliged to give back by saying yes.

Small→big · Big→small · Sweeten · Give first

Take a charity collector. Foot-in-the-door: 'just sign this petition' → later, 'now donate?'. Door-in-the-face: 'give £50 a month?' → 'okay, £5?'. Reciprocity: a free pin badge, then the ask. Each technique causes more yeses than a bare request.

Go further — higher-level insight: These work through consistency and social norms, not logic. Foot-in-the-door leans on wanting to seem consistent; reciprocity on a deep social rule that gifts must be repaid. Naming why a technique works is a high-level move.

Key idea: The techniques are well-evidenced and practical, but they don't work every time or on everyone.
Strengths and limitationsStrengthsLimitations
EvidenceDemonstrated in many field and lab studiesEffects vary by person, culture and situation
UseExplains sales, charity, marketing, persuasionSome techniques (low-balling) raise ethical concerns
ReachPractical for campaigns and everyday requestsCan fail or backfire if the trick is obvious

So compliance techniques are reliable, useful and well-supported, but a good evaluation notes their effect sizes vary, some raise ethical issues, and they can backfire once people notice the manipulation.

Watch out: Compliance is not obedience or conformity. Compliance = responding to a direct request; conformity = matching a group; obedience = following an authority's order. Keep them distinct.
