Contents

  • Aware — and aware that you're aware
  • Locke: a person can consider itself
  • Why self-consciousness matters
The big idea: A dog feels the cold. But do you think a dog ever thinks, 'here I am, feeling cold, wishing I were home'? That extra step — being aware of yourself having the experience — is self-consciousness, and it may be the heart of being a person.

There are two layers here. Consciousness is just having experiences. Self-consciousness is turning that awareness back on yourself — noticing that you are the one having them.

Just conscious

  • Feels heat, hunger, fear
  • Reacts to the world
  • No sense of 'I am the one feeling this'

Self-conscious

  • Feels heat — and knows that it is the one feeling it
  • Can think about its own thoughts
  • Can imagine its own past and future

The clearest classic statement of this idea comes from a philosopher you've already met.

Locke's definition of a person: John Locke defined a person as 'a thinking intelligent being… that can consider itself as itself, the same thinking thing, in different times and places.'

Unpack that: a person is a being that can turn its thinking onto itself — think 'that was me yesterday, this is me now, and I'll be me tomorrow.' That reflective self-awareness, for Locke, is exactly what makes something a person rather than just a clever animal.
Checkpoint — Locke: In one line: for Locke a person is a being that can consider itself as itself — one continuous 'me' it can think about across time.

Self-awareness isn't just a neat trick of the mind — it's what makes the rest of personhood possible.

What self-consciousness unlocks

1

Ownership

You can say 'that was MY choice' — so you can be praised or blamed for it.

2

Planning

You can picture your own future and act for it, not just react to now.

3

Change

You can judge yourself and decide to become different — 'I want to be kinder.'

know yourself → own your life

Go further — higher-level insight: Some animals may have a flicker of self-awareness — a chimp or a dolphin recognising itself in a mirror. That suggests self-consciousness might be a matter of degree, not a simple on/off switch. Hold that thought — it becomes decisive when we ask whether animals or AI could be persons.

Fill the gap: Locke says a person can 'consider itself as ______' — the same thinking thing across time. [1 mark]
