What an opinion column is: An opinion column (la rubrica d'opinione or l'editoriale) is a short, personal newspaper or blog text in which the writer defends one clear point of view on a current issue. It belongs to the theme Media texts (Topic 2.3). You need the words below to state a stance, argue it persuasively and close strongly.

Why this matters: An opinion column lives or dies by its stance. A column with no clear opinion reads like a news report and loses Criterion C (conceptual understanding of the text type). Use these opinion verbs from your very first line.
Have something to say: Examiners reward a clear stance backed by developed arguments, not just opinion words. Decide what you think, give a reason and an example, and acknowledge the other side before you knock it down. Common column topics: screen-time limits, pedestrian zones, school rules, the environment.

Link your ideas: Connectors turn opinions into an argument: inoltre (besides), tuttavia / però (however), perciò / quindi (therefore), anche se (although). A column should also concede the other side once — «… ha ragione su un punto, tuttavia …» — and then win the point.

- The question — «Con quale mezzo retorico si apre la rubrica?»
- Find it in the text. Look at the very first line: «Ci serve davvero un altro centro commerciale?» — that is a question put to the reader.
- The answer — Con una domanda retorica («Ci serve davvero un altro centro commerciale?»), che si rivolge direttamente al lettore e lo coinvolge.
Reading technique: In a column, find the opinion verbs («secondo me», «sono convinto») to pin down the stance, and look at the first and last lines for the headline-hook and the call to action — that is where the conventions live.
