Four building blocks: A report is organised, not chatty. It has a title, an aim, a findings section (the data) and a recommendations + conclusion. Headings (Überschriften) make the sections obvious — that visible structure is a report convention examiners look for.

Report structure — 4 steps

1

Titel

A heading naming the topic. „Bericht über die Schulmensa“.

2

Ziel / Einleitung

State the purpose impersonally.

3

Ergebnisse / Daten

Present facts objectively. „Den Daten zufolge ist festzustellen, dass…“

4

Empfehlungen + Schluss

Recommend, then conclude. „Es wird empfohlen, … Abschließend lässt sich sagen, dass…“

Title → Aim → Findings → Recommendations + Conclusion

Bericht (report — DO this)

  • Sachlicher, unpersönlicher Ton: „Es wird empfohlen…“
  • Daten und Erkenntnisse aus einer Umfrage
  • Titel und Abschnitte mit Überschriften

Nicht im Bericht (avoid)

  • Persönliche Gefühle: „Ich finde das schrecklich.“
  • Begrüßung und Verabschiedung wie in einer E-Mail
  • Umgangssprache und Emojis
Findings first, advice after: Keep the order: present the data, then recommend. A recommendation with no data behind it is weak; data with no recommendation leaves the report unfinished. Connect them with deshalb (therefore) or daher (hence).

Read a real report: Here is a short report of the kind Paper 2 (Reading) gives you — or that you write in Paper 1.

How to read it

  • Read it once for the gist.
  • Then notice the conventions: a title, an impersonal aim, data, a recommendation.
  • Tap the audio button to hear it or Übersetzung anzeigen if you get stuck.

untersuchen
to examine / investigate
Verbesserungen vorschlagen
to propose improvements
der Umfrage zufolge
according to the survey
das Angebot
the range / offering
die Wartezeit verkürzen
to shorten the waiting time

IB-style task — eine Frage aus Paper 2

Eine Frage, Schritt für Schritt

  1. The question — „Was wird dem Bericht zufolge empfohlen?“
  2. Find it in the text.
Reading technique: For a „dem Bericht zufolge“ (according to the report) question, find the exact sentence that proves your answer — in a report the recommendation almost always sits after „Es wird empfohlen…“.
TeilAuf DeutschEnglish
Inhalt 1Stelle die Ergebnisse des Projekts dar.Present the results of the project.
Recommend how to expand it next school year.
RegisterFormelles, unpersönliches Register.Formal, impersonal register.
LängeSchreibe zwischen 450 und 600 Wörter.Write 450–600 words.

Report structure — 4 steps

1

Titel

A heading naming the topic. „Bericht über das Recyclingprojekt der Schule“.

2

Ziel

State the purpose impersonally.

3

Ergebnisse

Present the data objectively.

Warum es punktet — why it scores: This answer hits all three Paper 1 criteria — here's what earns each one:

A — Language /12

  • Passive + zu-infinitives, used accurately
  • Report vocabulary: Ergebnisse, Empfehlung, Verbesserung

B — Message /12

  • Task fully done: presents results AND recommends how to expand
  • Data developed with a concrete figure (200 kg, Beteiligung gestiegen)

C — Conceptual /6

  • Report conventions: a title naming the topic
  • Sections: aim → findings → recommendation → conclusion
  • A neutral, objective tone throughout

Hörverstehen — ein Bericht über das Sportfest

Paper 2 tests listening (25 marks): you hear short clips, each played twice, and you never see the words. Here a student summarises a report aloud — read the questions first, then listen and reveal the answers.

  1. Was war das Ziel von Lenas Bericht? (What was the aim of Lena's report?)
  2. Was wird in dem Bericht empfohlen? (What does the report recommend?)

Guten Tag.

Good afternoon. The aim of my report was to evaluate this year's sports day and to propose improvements. According to the answers of more than two hundred participants, it can be observed that most found the day a success, but felt the waiting times at the stations were too long. In addition, there was no shade on the sports field in the heat. Therefore it is recommended to offer more stations and to put up sun sails. In conclusion, it can be said that the sports day is popular but would improve further through these changes.

  2. Mehr Stationen anzubieten und Sonnensegel aufzustellen.
