Key concepts in Identities

Key Idea: Identities is about who you are: how you live, your health, your beliefs, the groups you belong to and the languages you speak.

Phrases for every lesson

  • Give your view: In my opinion… / I believe that…
  • Weigh two sides: On the one hand… on the other hand…
  • Link your ideas: however, therefore, although
  • Writing: pick the right text type and tone. Plan a catchy start, your ideas and a strong ending.

Lifestyles

  • Words: lifestyle, routine, well-being, to commute, to switch off, sedentary
  • Debate: busy city life or a simpler, slower life?

Health & well-being

  • Words: diet, to exercise, to sleep well, stress, mental health, balance
  • Debate: good habits or bad habits? How do body and mind work together?

Beliefs & values

  • Words: belief, value, faith, respect, tolerance, equality
  • Debate: tradition or change? How do we respect difference?
  • Give your opinion without judging other people.

Subcultures

  • Words: subculture, urban tribe, to belong to, online community, taste
  • Debate: belonging and self-expression, or the pressure to fit in?
  • Always talk about subcultures in a positive way, as identity and respect.

Language & identity

  • Words: mother tongue, bilingual, dialect, indigenous language, to preserve a language
  • Debate: why learn languages? Why keep minority languages alive?
Each lesson works the same way: learn its key words, say what you think and why, and link your ideas.

Which word means travelling to work or school every day? To commute.

Which word describes a life with very little exercise? Sedentary.

What must you avoid when you talk about beliefs? Judging other people. Give a balanced opinion.

A person who speaks two languages is…? Bilingual.

How should you present a subculture? Positively: as a way to show identity, with respect.
