What it is: The Individual Oral is a talk with your teacher about a literary extract. It has a preparation time and three parts.
| Stage | What happens | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | Choose one extract and plan. No dictionary or course notes. | 20 |
| Part 1: presentation | You talk about the extract. Spend most of the time on the extract itself. | 3–4 |
| Part 2: discussion | Your teacher asks more about the extract. | 4–5 |
| Part 3: conversation | You talk about one or more of the course themes. | 5–6 |
Two rules
- The stimulus: you are shown two extracts of up to about 300 words, one from each work you studied, and choose one.
- Notes: up to 10 bullet points. You can look at them, but never read them aloud.

| Total | 30 | 25% of your grade |
Three habits to practise
- Place the extract in the work in one sentence, then comment on it.
- Back up each idea with a short quotation from the extract.
- Never give one-word answers: add a reason or an example.
