Key concepts in Using evidence

Key Idea: In the HL essay, a quotation only counts as evidence when you analyse the choice inside it and link it to your argument.

Using evidence

  1. Embed short — Weave a few words into your own sentence.
  2. Analyse the choice — Name the technique and its effect: how and why.
  3. Link — Show how it proves your point.

When does a quotation become evidence? Once you have analysed it and shown what it proves.

How long should quotations be? A few words, embedded.

What comes straight after every quote? Analysis: what the device is and what it does.

What do you do with a quote that does not help? Cut it.
