Contents

  • What crosses a distance
  • The part that does not travel
  • The relationship that changed in kind
  • Exam-style: families and relationships

Families separated by migration, work or borders now stay in daily contact — one of the largest and least argued-about gains in this subject. What does not cross is harder to name, and matters.

What carries across a distance, what does not, and the relationship that changed in kind.

Crosses the distance

  • Words, faces and news
  • Arrangements and decisions
  • Being present for the big events

Does not cross

  • Being in the room while nothing happens
  • Noticing something is wrong before it is said
  • Ordinary, unplanned time together
Why the right column matters: Close relationships are mostly maintained in unplanned time, not in scheduled calls. A call has a purpose and an ending; the rest of it does not, and that is the difference.

A parent can now see a child's location, messages and screen time continuously. That is not the same relationship with more information — it is a different one.

Real-world examples you can name

M-Pesa mobile money — launched 2007

Money is sent as a text message and cashed in or out at a local agent, so a phone becomes a bank account without a bank. Research has linked it to households moving out of extreme poverty, particularly those headed by women.

Who it affected: People with a phone but no bank branch within reach.

School closures and remote learning — 2020–2022

At the peak, UNESCO counted over 1.5 billion learners out of school. Where teaching moved online it kept going for households with a device and a connection and stopped for those without, turning the digital divide into a measurable gap in learning.

Who it affected: School-age children, most sharply those in low-income and rural households.

Safety bought with trust: Monitoring buys real safety and spends something hard to get back.

Being trusted is how independence is learned, so a child who has never been unobserved has not practised making a decision nobody would check.

How this is tested — sources about family monitoring and long-distance contact appear regularly and reward a balanced mechanism-based answer. It comes up two ways:

Paper 1 — structured question

  • Part c: evaluate parental monitoring software
  • Part b: explain a limitation of contact at a distance

Paper 2 — source-based question

  • Q4: synthesise sources on families and technology
  • Q3: compare two sources with different views of monitoring
The trap: “it brings people closer”: Say what carries and what does not. The distinction between scheduled contact and unplanned time is the analysis.
