The arrow may point the other way
Distress can cause more use. Somebody awake and alone at two in the morning reaches for a phone; the phone did not cause the hour.
A third thing may cause both
Less sleep, less time outdoors, more time alone and more academic pressure all move together.
Averages hide the people affected
The average effect is small. For specific groups and specific content it is large, and averaging removes them from view.
This is not a defence of platforms: It is the opposite. Vague claims are easy to dismiss; a named mechanism affecting a named group is not, and it is what actually forces a change.

YouTube's recommendation system — deep-learning system described 2016; borderline-content changes from January 2019
A ranking system that predicts what a viewer will watch next, which the company has said drives the majority of watch time. After criticism that it led viewers towards ever more extreme material, the company began demoting 'borderline' content rather than removing it.
Who it affected: Roughly two billion monthly viewers, and creators whose income depends on the ranking.
#BookTok and algorithmic taste — from 2020
A community of readers posting short book videos whose recommendations, amplified by TikTok's ranking, put backlist titles onto bestseller lists years after publication and changed how publishers market fiction.
Who it affected: Readers, authors and booksellers — an industry reshaped by a recommender.
How this is tested — this topic tests whether you can handle weak evidence honestly, which is a Paper 2 and Paper 3 skill in itself. It comes up two ways:
Paper 1 — structured question
- Part c: evaluate the claim that platforms harm young people
- Part b: explain a limitation of evidence in a source
Paper 2 — source-based question
- Q1 and Q2: read a chart about use and wellbeing
- Q4: synthesise sources that disagree about the evidence
The trap: certainty in either direction: Both “screens are destroying a generation” and “there is no effect” overstate what the evidence supports. Name mechanisms.
