On the lab stool: A lightly textured seat keeps a student from sliding forward and hides scratches.
A radiused front edge stops the seat cutting into the back of a knee — form doing a job.

Material selection is usually decided by properties, so the aesthetic has to be achieved afterwards. That is what the statement means by enhanced using a variety of finishing techniques.

A finish is a maintenance decision: Every applied coating is something that can chip, and the substrate underneath then has to survive on its own.
That is why anodising beats painting on an aluminium frame in a wet lab, and why pigmenting a polymer beats spraying it. Say this, and the aesthetic answer becomes a technical one.
How this is tested — selecting materials and finishes for texture, form and colour. It comes up two ways:
Paper 1 — multiple choice
- Match a finishing technique to the material it suits.
- Identify what a stated texture or colour achieves functionally.
Paper 2 — analysing a product
- Justify the aesthetic characteristics chosen for a named product.
- Explain why a finishing technique was selected over another.
The trap: Writing that a colour "looks modern". Every aesthetic decision must carry what the user reads from it or what it does functionally — usually both.
