The big idea: Recovery is not one thing. Reuse, repair, recondition or remanufacture and recycle each preserve less than the one before, and take-back legislation is what makes any of them reachable.

Each route depends on a design decision taken years earlier — a screw instead of a weld, one polymer instead of a laminate.

What each route keeps, what the product needs for it to happen, and what stops it.

ReuseEverything — shape, assembly, material and embodied energyA product that survives a first life visibly intact, and a route to a second owner

Recondition / remanufactureThe parts, rebuilt to as-new and often warrantiedParts that can be cleaned, measured and refitted, and a product worth the labour

Take-back legislationNothing by itself — it opens the routeThe producer made responsible at end of life, so collection exists at all
Legislation cannot open a glued box: Take-back rules can require a producer to collect a product. They cannot make a welded-shut product repairable, or separate a bonded laminate.

Every recovery route depends on a decision taken at design stage, which is why this statement sits in a design course rather than a policy one.

A recovery route also needs somebody with a reason to collect. Where the business model changes, recovery stops being a cost and becomes the point.

The sentence to use: A product designed to be sold ends in a bin. A product designed to be returned ends in a loop.

Almost every recovery question can be answered by naming the design decision and the business reason together.

How this is tested — how designers can consider recovery and restoration of products, components and materials. It comes up two ways:

Paper 1 — multiple choice

  • Rank recovery routes by what they preserve.
  • Identify the design decision a stated route depends on.

Paper 2 — analysing a product

  • Explain how a named product could be designed for recovery.
  • Evaluate take-back legislation as a route to recovery.
The trap: Answering with recycling. It is the last route and keeps the least — reuse, repair and remanufacture all preserve far more, and all depend on design decisions.
