Key concepts in Delivering the IA

Key Idea: On the day you speak from key-word notes for 3–4 minutes. Then come two conversations: first about the extract, then about the world.
Your 20 minutes
JobWhat you doTime
ChooseRead both extracts and pick one0–3 min
UnderlineFour or five short quotations3–8 min
OutlineFive blocks in key words: place, what happens, people and setting, ideas, the work8–15 min
RehearseYour first and last sentence, in your head15–20 min
Part 2 and Part 3

Part 2: the extract: Questions on the extract you presented. Evidence: quotations from the extract. Marked in B2 and C.

Part 3: the world: One or more of the five themes. Your opinions and your life. Evidence: real examples from the Spanish-speaking world. B2 and C again.

Build every answer

  1. Answer and justify — {{En parte, sí, porque…|Partly yes, because…}}
  2. Prove it — A quotation in Part 2, a real example in Part 3.
  3. Add a nuance — {{Sin embargo… / Depende de…|However… / It depends on…}}
Phrases for each job
JobPhrase
Present{{La obra trata de…|The work is about…}}
Quote{{Como dice el narrador, «…»|As the narrator says, «…»}}
Interpret{{Esta comparación sugiere…|This simile suggests…}}
Give an opinion{{Podría interpretarse como…|It could be read as…}}
Link{{Volviendo a la obra,…|Going back to the work,…}}
Buy time{{A ver, déjeme pensar…|Let me think…}}
When the teacher says «hablando de…», leave the book and talk about the world.

Which block of the presentation gets the most time? The ideas: about a minute and a half. If you must cut, cut the plot.

What is wrong with «La obra es sobre…»? It copies English. Use «trata de».

A narrator tells the story. Do you say «el autor dice»? No. The narrator is not the author: «el narrador dice».

«Es posible que el autor ___ (querer)…» «Quiera»: «es posible que» takes the subjunctive.

You didn't understand the question. What do you say? «Perdone, ¿podría reformular la pregunta?» Asking is part of the interaction.

Your notes: key words or sentences? Key words only.
