This is Option B (Oceans and coastal margins), examined on Paper 1. SL answers 2 options, HL answers 3 — the same questions at both levels. The coast is shaped by marine processes (what the sea does) and subaerial processes (what the land and air do above the waterline). Together they carve erosion landforms and build deposition landforms, and changing sea level reshapes whole coasts. The skill examiners test off the photo or OS-map stimulus: Identify landforms, State a grid reference, Estimate a distance or retreat figure off a scale or graph, then Outline / Explain the process behind the feature.

Key terms to use precisely

  • Marine vs subaerial — the sea doing the work (waves, hydraulic action, abrasion) vs the land/air doing it (weathering, mass movement). Naming a wave process for a subaerial part scores zero.
  • Longshore drift — the zig-zag transport of sediment along a coast by waves hitting it at an angle.
  • Lithology — the rock type and its resistance; hard rock erodes slowly, soft rock fast.
  • Eustatic / isostatic — a global rise/fall of the sea (eustatic) vs the land rising/sinking (isostatic).
  • Emergence vs submergence — a falling sea/rising land strands raised beaches & relict cliffs; a rising sea drowns valleys into fjords & rias.

Read the axes first. About how far had the cliff retreated by 2021, and how fast is it eroding now? (Read straight up from the year to the line, and quote the units.)

Tip: For a coastal photo/map: Identify the cliff, stack, arch or wave-cut platform you can see; read a six-figure grid reference (eastings first, then northings); Estimate a distance with the scale (on a 1:25 000 map, 4 cm = 1 km). Then link the feature back to its process — a stack means a collapsed arch, a wave-cut platform means cliff retreat.

🪸 8.2.2 — Coral reefs and mangroves

Coral reefs and mangrove swamps are warm-water coastal ecosystems that protect the coast, support fisheries and tourism and store carbon. Option B tests how they form, why they matter (their value to stakeholders) and the natural and human threats destroying them. The data skill is reading a bar graph of reef loss by ocean region: Identify the region with the most loss, Estimate one region's percentage off the axis.

Key terms to use precisely

  • Coral bleaching — when the sea gets too warm, corals expel the algae that feed and colour them, turning white and often dying.
  • Ocean acidification — extra CO₂ dissolving in seawater makes it harder for corals to build their skeletons.
  • Ecosystem services — the benefits an ecosystem gives people (coastal protection, fisheries, tourism, carbon storage).
  • Stakeholder — any group with an interest in the ecosystem (fishers, tourists, residents, governments, conservationists).
  • Blue carbon — the carbon stored by coastal ecosystems such as mangroves; lost when they are cleared.
Example: The Great Barrier Reef (Australia) supports tens of thousands of tourism jobs and shelters the Queensland coast. The Sundarbans (Bangladesh/India), the world's largest mangrove forest, blunts cyclone storm-surges that would otherwise drown delta villages. The biggest driver of decline is climate change — warming bleaches reefs across the Indian Ocean, while mangroves are cleared for shrimp aquaculture in South-East Asia. The Galapagos Marine Reserve (Ecuador) shows the response: a protected zone limiting fishing and tourism so the ecosystem can recover.

Marine vs subaerial — what's the difference? Marine = the sea does the work (waves, hydraulic action, abrasion). Subaerial = the land/air does it above the waterline (freeze-thaw, salt weathering, mass movement). A subaerial answer must NOT name a wave process.

Raised beach vs fjord — which is which? A raised beach is an old beach lifted above the sea by isostatic rebound (emergence). A fjord is a glacial valley drowned by a rising sea (submergence).
