Key Idea: Delivering the HL IA is about the talk itself: a presentation built on the extract, developed answers in Parts 2 and 3, and the language of literary discussion.
The presentation
- Place — Where the extract comes in the work, and what happens.
- Focus — Name the two ideas you will talk about.
- Point 1 — A claim, a short quotation, a comment.
- Point 2 — The same pattern for your second idea.
- Link — Connect it to the whole work. End on an open question for Part 2.
Notes are cue words, never read aloud.
The conversation
- Part 2: evidence from the extract, with the rest of the work as support.
- Part 3: evidence from your life, your country and the world.
- Answer → reason → example → ask back. Never a one-word answer.
Language for the oral
- Five jobs: present, quote, give an opinion, link, buy time.
- Each quotation gets a verb like suggests or reveals.
- "The narrator" is the voice; "the writer" chose the words.
- Hedge your reading, never the facts.
Every point in the presentation follows one pattern: claim, short quotation, comment.
What evidence do you use in Part 3? Things beyond the book: your own experience and real places.
How do you open the presentation? Place the extract in the work.
Is the narrator the same as the writer? No. They are a voice inside the story.
What is a good last move in a Part 3 answer? Ask your teacher a question back.
How many ideas do you focus on? Two.
