IB Math AI SL Most Common Questions Explained

IB Math AI4/23/2026•4 min read

If you are revising everything, you are probably wasting time. IB Math AI SL is more predictable than students think because examiners keep returning to the same question types.

That does not mean every paper is identical. It means your highest scoring revision comes from mastering repeat patterns first, then cleaning up weaker topics after that.

The repeat-heavy question families

  • Chi-squared tests
  • Financial maths
  • Trigonometric models
  • Binomial and normal distribution
  • Functions and optimisation

The most common IB Math AI question types

1. Chi-squared tests

Chi-squared questions show up almost every year because they test more than calculator skill. You need hypotheses, expected values, the test statistic, and a conclusion in context.

The fastest way to lose marks is to do the maths correctly but write a weak final sentence.

2. Financial maths

Loans, interest, depreciation, and total paid are high-yield because the structure repeats. If your calculator workflow is clean, these can become some of your most reliable marks.

3. Trigonometric models

Ferris wheels, tides, daylight hours, and wave-style contexts all sit in the same family. Focus on amplitude, period, and what the graph actually means.

Quick rule: if you can explain the context, you are much less likely to throw away interpretation marks.

4. Probability: binomial and normal

This is where wording matters. “At least,” “exactly,” and “more than” change the setup, so rushed reading turns easy marks into avoidable mistakes.

5. Optimisation

Optimisation checks whether you can turn a model into a decision. Finding a maximum or minimum is only part of the job. You still need to say what that answer means in the scenario.

What this means for revision

You do not need to revise everything at the same intensity. You need to master the patterns IB keeps rewarding.

What top students do differently

They spot the question family fast, set it up cleanly, and use the same high-scoring structure every time.

Final tip

Top students do not study more topics. They get much better at the patterns that appear most often.
