✍️ How to write a recommendation
Big Idea: 10-mark 'discuss' or 'recommend' questions need a balanced argument followed by a justified conclusion. Don't just describe — you must EVALUATE and DECIDE! ⚖️
The structure that gets top marks
- Step 1: Argue FOR Option A — use SWOT factors and case study data
- Step 2: Argue FOR Option B — give it a fair hearing too
- Step 3: Evaluate — weigh up which option is BEST for this business, considering short-term and long-term
- Step 4: Conclude — clearly state which option you recommend and WHY
You CANNOT get full marks without a justified conclusion. 'It depends' without a final recommendation won't reach the top band!
🏆 What makes a strong conclusion?
- Makes a clear choice — 'I recommend Option A because...'
- Is supported by evidence from the case study
- Acknowledges the trade-offs — 'Although Option B offers X, Option A is better because...'
- Considers short-term AND long-term impact
- Mentions key stakeholders who will be affected
Strong conclusion: 'I recommend Option A because it uses the business's strong brand to enter a growing market, and its $2m cash reserves can fund the expansion without risky borrowing. Although Option B has higher potential profits, the business lacks the expertise for that market.'

🚫 Common mistakes to avoid
- ❌ Only arguing for one side — you MUST discuss both options
- ❌ No conclusion — sitting on the fence gets low marks
- ❌ Generic answers — not using the specific case study data
- ❌ Just listing SWOT points without explaining their impact
- ❌ Ignoring financial data provided in the question
- ❌ Writing too much description and not enough evaluation
The magic formula: Balanced arguments + Case study evidence + Stakeholder impact + Justified conclusion = Top marks! 🌟
